When you come for your first visit, please bring the completed information forms you will have received in our welcome package. Your appointment will begin with a consultation with Dr. Becker to answer any questions or concerns you may have before beginning your clinical examination.
We will determine what X-rays are necessary, then perform the clinical exam starting with checking the muscles and glands of the head and neck. Then we will do a soft tissue exam, oral cancer screening and measure gum pockets to determine a baseline of your periodontal health. We will check your TMJ (temperomandibular joint), the “hinge” of the jaw for proper function. Finally, we will closely examine each tooth.
After gathering all this information, the doctor will briefly explain the findings, provide oral hygiene instruction and answer any new questions you may have. A treatment plan will be put together and our patient coordinators will assist in setting up future appointments and financial arrangements. In cases where more extensive treatment is needed, we will set a follow-up consultation with the doctor to review a comprehensive plan. In order to complete this very thorough exam, we ask that you allow one to one and a half hours of your time depending on the complexity of your dental health.
YOUR CHILD'S FIRST VISIT - A child’s first visit (ages 3-13) consists of a very thorough exam of the teeth, surrounding gums and soft tissues. We provide oral hygiene instruction, paint the teeth to see where the plaque is, and perform a hygiene polish to clean the teeth. We will also take X-rays to look for cavities between the teeth and to make sure the permanent teeth are where they should be. It is important to take care of the primary or “baby teeth” as they guide the eruption of the permanent teeth. During a child’s very first dental visit, we introduce them to the ride in the chair, the wind, water and polisher. We do only as much as they will tolerate and then let them pick a prize for being such a “good helper”. We strive to always make it a positive experience to help build trust and to help put your child at ease during future dental visits.
