“Don’t use your teeth as tools!”
This is a common phrase that you may have heard Dr. Becker say when you are in the office, and hopefully you are following her directions! The thing about this is that a lot of people don’t realize when they are using their teeth in funny ways. Sometimes these things can be super challenging habits to break. Other times it’s just when we are in a bind for a real tool. Wondering what we at Montclair Smile Design consider as using your teeth as tools? Read on! Here’s a list of just a few things:
Top 5 Teeth as Tools Faux Pas
- Biting your nails
- Opening a package
- Prying open a bobby pin
- Opening a bottle or soda can (seriously, this happens)
- Cracking open heavy duty nut shells
Some of these things may be really simple and obvious “don’t do that” moves, but you’d be surprised how often we hear that people are hurting their teeth by doing them. We think the main point here is to draw attention to these uses so that we are aware they happen. AND that they are not good! The initial effects are these five things (and more unlisted of course) are that of broken or chipped teeth. Underlying issues that could arise include malpositioned teeth.
Please, think twice before and don’t use your teeth as tools. The next time you go to rip a tag off your new shirt using your teeth to cut through that plastic fastener, halt! Stop! Grab some scissors. Protect your pearly whites. Our teeth serves us for many things that are necessary for life and we actually need them whole and functioning. If, for some reason, you have found yourself in a pickle and broken a tooth, luckily the doctors here at Montclair Smile Design are the perfect ones to help.
